The Events of That Week
Collins, London, 1972. First Edition, Brown Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 9780002212137 gilt titles spine; cover illust. by Jawdokimov; When Brig, English writer on holiday in Sicily, accidentally met Theresa. a beautiful young American, in the bar of their hotel. it was the beginning of a series of accidents - but none as happy as this first. The quiet almost idyllic atmosphere of their time together was destined to be shattered by the events of just one week. Out for a drive one day, Brig stops by chance at an isolated garage, and becomes the innocent victim of blackmail by the Mafia. The task: to hide a wanted man in the boot of his car and get him through police checkpoints. The threat: if he does not co-operate, his own life will be a short one. But his involvement with the cold-blooded members of the Mafia does not end here. Forced on only by the threat of harm to Theresa. Brig is ordered to travel to Malta, and from there to Naples. Shatteringly, he realizes he is now virtually one of them - the Mafia are using him in their drug-running operations. Grabbing any chance to escape their ever-tightening net Brig enlists the help of his cousin, a member of the consular service in Naples - a well-meaning character who only creates further complications. Told by various characters involved sometimes only peripherally - in the adventure, Nicolas Bentley creates an intriguing mosaic to reveal the events of that week. Bush, Christopher
The Case of the Seven Bells: A Ludovic Travers Mystery
MacMillan, New York, 1950. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. It was a bewildering problem that confronted Ludovic Travers when the spivs who threatened the barmaid, Maudie Brown, let fall word of a proposed robbery at the bungalow of a famous actress. And why was there a crying baby at the bungalow? And what connection could there have been with a certain famous clown? And why the queer movements of a once famous conductor? The questions crowded in on Travers and Wharton, but readers of Christopher Bush’s “Case books” will not need reassuring that skillful and ingenious detection won the day and solved the mystery of the Seven Bells. Map end-papers of mediaeval Cambridge. The tale is set in Cambridge, where a child has been hideously murdered and other children have disappeared. The Jews, made scapegoats by the all-powerful Christian clergy, have been forced to retreat into the castle to avoid slaughter by angry townspeople. Henry, King of England, is displeased. 1843430584 Mankell, Henning, The Return of the Dancing Master
Mankell, Henning
The Return of the Dancing Master
The Harvill Press, London, 2003. First Edition, Black Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 9781843430582 gilt titles spine; black endpapers; CWA Gold Dagger Award winning author; "Herbert Molin, a retired police officer, is living alone in a remote cottage in the vast forests of Harjedalen in northern Sweden. He has two obsessions: one is the tango, and the other is a conviction that he is being hunted, constantly pursued by 'demons'. He has no close friends, no close neighbours, and by the time his body is found, Molin is almost unrecognisable. Stefan Lindman, a police officer on extended sick leave, hears of the death of his former colleague and, to take his mind off his own problems, decides to involve himself in the case. What he discovers, to his horror and disbelief, is a network of evil almost unimaginable in this remote district, and one which seems impossible to link to Molin's death. The Return of the Dancing Master explores a segment of Swedish society far from Kurt Wallander's southern Skane, but one in which civilised behaviour is equally threatened. For sheer story-telling, this novel will be hailed as one of Henning Mankell's finest, as also for its dissection of the dark side of contemporary life in Scandinavia."; as-new copy in an intact & protected D/J.; 407 pages.
